    Bag of Bones

A Playlist of Things I Heard This Year

This mostly started off as a playlist that I shared a few weeks ago on Spotify, which began with The Holiday’s song, Broken Bones. Many of these songs were not released in 2011, but I did listen to them a lot this year. I have to give props to Spotify, it’s a great tool to discover new artists and share music with friends.

You can download the mix or stream it on Spotify. Again, this is just a playlist of tracks, I haven’t gotten around to learning to dj just yet, but it’s on my to-do list for 2012.

Oh yea, and if you already have not checked it out, the homie, Chop Steak, handled the hip hop side of things already with his Occupy Xmas Mixtape.

    Phone Book Type

    Cutting Up The Yellow Pages

As part of my exploration for my thesis, I began cutting up some phone books. For my thesis next year I’m going to be focusing on the ideas of Remix and Remix Culture. Still have a lot of research to do, but will start by doing some things by just playing around and experimenting…can’t wait to really get into it all.

    Nokia Pure Posters

A Set of Posters Using Nokia’s New Typeface

Last week I reviewed Nokia’s new typeface, Nokia Pure. In my research I found these posters, done by several artists and studios, as a promo for the new typeface. The one above was done by Bond. Check out the rest of the posters after the jump.

New Cover Artwork For The LOEGz

First Look at Concealed Weapons 3

In 2009 I began a series of covers for the Austin based rap group, The League of Extraordinary Gz. The original Concealed Weapons cover has taken a life of its own and has been turned into large part of the group’s identity–it was even nominated for a Southern Entertainment Award.

The popularity of the Concealed Weapons artwork is good and bad–good because people seem to love it, but bad because fans seem to expect to see it everywhere. Either way, as my work with The LOEGz continues I’m going to keep trying to challenge what people expect to see from hip-hop projects, particularly southern hip-hop. As the League says, “we gon’ make it.”

Big Krit’s Return of 4 Eva

New Album From Mississippi’s Big Krit

Mississippi’s Big K.R.I.T. just dropped his latest project, Return of 4 Eva. Though I’m not sure if it counts for anything, he was included in XXL’s Freshman Class of 2011.  I’m not sure if mainstream hip-hop publications hold any real cred anymore, especially when it comes to picking new acts, but this can’t be bad for K.R.I.T. Hopefully this is a sign that his major label release will be up to par with everything he’s done so far. The cover artwork was done by Eric Bailey.

    Redesigned TheHonestApe.com

    Welcome to My New Website

Hello everyone. It’s been quite a few years since I’ve updated my website and in those years a lot has happened. I have moved from Austin to DC and now Baltimore where I’m finishing up my first year at MICA’s Graphic Design MFA program. I’m in the middle of a lot of school and work projects right now, but I also realized I needed a new site to showcase all of the work I’ve done up to this point.

I’ll be gradually adding projects to the Work section of the site, as well as fixing any bugs. Feel free to chime in and leave me any comments/tips/hellos anytime.
